Have you ever heard of speed dating? It’s an opportunity for people to quickly meet a large number of people to potentially date. Attendees are paired with each person attending the session for two minutes. At the end of the two minutes, the people move to their next partner. You can also use this concept as an effective speed meeting icebreaker.
The goal? Attendees meet a large number of people in a short period of time, The goal, of course, in speed dating, is to find one or more people with whom you’d like to spend more time on an actual date. Participants exchange names and contact information during the two minutes so that they can connect with the people who appealed to them following the speed dating session.
It’s an efficient way for people who are interested in finding a special someone to meet a large number of people quickly in a safe environment. Presumably, other attendees share similar goals and expectations when they decide to participate in speed dating activities.
7 Ideas for Using Task Cards in the Classroom
In the vein of my use of war cards for logarithms , I have stolen another Kate Nowak idea for working on the procedural fluency end of student understanding of rational expressions. This past Friday, we had our review for the Rational Functions and Equations test, so I felt like it would be a good day to introduce the activity to the students.
For anyone unfamiliar with speed dating, here is a quick run-down:. This procedural practice tool is one that is an excellent way to get students talking about a specific problem with a narrow focus and to have to understand their problem in such a way that requires that they can teach it to another student. As my 3rd period class completed the activity, it became apparent that the pace of some pairings was much faster than others and that it was causing a weird flow to the activity, so by 4th period I decided to give my Test Review questions not like the ones they were completing during speed dating to complete together while waiting on the other pairs in the group to finish.
These had been previously planned as a separate activity and this differentiation for pacing proved to be a much more efficient use of the class time in the end, especially since the pairs changed throughout the activity.
Each team has a mini-whiteboard and pen. This is a “speed-dating” style activity in which all the students pair up and ask each other questions for a minute.
RSS Feed. Active Science resources ASR. Task 1 I asked the students to find the periodic table in their school diaries. I asked them to question: why is this table printed table the school diary? Does that have any significance? What does that inclusion tell you about the importance of the periodic table? They wrote their responses on the A0 whiteboard.

Let’s do speed dating in GROUPS. Have everyone get a mini whiteboard and a marker. Give each group 2 copies of the same problem.
This semester one of my big wins has been the introduction of mini whiteboards to my Biology class. Over the last few years I have been flipping my class, freeing up more class time to run activities. The use of mini whiteboards really delivers the type of activity I want more of in my classes. Using mini whiteboards has engaged students, encouraged collaboration and has offered great formative assessment. The Inspiration The idea of using whiteboards in my class came from listening to how other flipped teachers were using their redefined class time.
Although I had seen mini whiteboards in Primary classrooms I had not thought that they would have a place in my Senior Biology classroom. I was inspired by maths teachers Junior and Senior who were describing how they were offering quality formative assessment — the thinking and the misconceptions were very visible. I also heard how the boards created good opportunities for active learning and encouraged student participation.
Students were then given an inheritance problem to solve. The boards worked perfectly! Students were willing to take a risk and have a go at the problems — it is amazing how much erasability of the whiteboard increased student willingness to try. In addition it was very easy for me to float around the room and see how students were approaching the problem. This was perfect formative assessment without the emotional cost of starting problems again.
